CHICAGO (AP) ? His confidence surging, Mitt Romney pointedly ignored his Republican rivals on the eve of Tuesday's high-stakes primary election in Illinois and turned his fire instead on the Democrat he hopes to oust in the fall.

Romney pushed into President Barack Obama's home territory, assailing Obama's economic credentials on the Chicago campus where the president taught for more than a decade. At the same time, GOP contender Rick Santorum struggled to explain why the nation's unemployment rate is not his top concern and why the economy isn't the issue that defines the race even as he tried to rally anti-Romney conservatives.

The contrasts offered a look inside two campaigns seemingly moving in different directions, just one day before Illinois voters decided what could be the most significant Republican contest through the end of the month.

"Freedom is on the ballot this year," Romney told students and supporters at the University of Chicago, contending that the nation's recovery from recession was being limited by an "assault on our economic freedom" by Obama. "I am offering a real choice and a very different beginning," he said.

Romney was trying to show he was more than ready to rise above the grinding GOP primary battle and move toward a general election matchup against Obama. The front-runner, he has secured more delegates than his opponents combined, and his nomination seems more assured each week as Santorum's shoestring campaign struggles under the weight of continued disorganization.

But a victory in Illinois' Tuesday primary is by no means assured.

Romney has spent big on advertising and will have devoted more than three straight days to the state ? an eternity by some standards in this constantly shifting campaign ? by the time votes are counted Tuesday night.

After embarrassing Santorum with a one-sided victory in Puerto Rico Sunday, the Romney campaign sees in Illinois a potential breaking point for stubborn rivals who have defiantly vowed to stay in the race until the GOP's national convention in August. Should Santorum and Newt Gingrich stay politically alive until then and follow through on their threat, it could turn the convention into an intra-party fight for the first time since 1976.

Illinois is expected to be far closer than Puerto Rico's blowout, although recent polls suggest Romney may be pulling away. Even if he should lose the popular vote, Romney is poised to win the delegate battle. Santorum cannot win at least 10 of the state's 54 delegates available Tuesday because his campaign didn't file the necessary paperwork

Still, Santorum campaigned hard across the state Sunday and Monday in light of the stakes in Illinois, one of the last premier battlegrounds before the Republican race enters an extended lull after Saturday's contest in Louisiana.

"If we're able to come out of Illinois with a huge or surprise win, I guarantee you, I guarantee you that we will win this nomination," Santorum said.

He rallied conservatives on Monday in Dixon, Ill., the hometown of President Ronald Reagan, saying that Obama's health care overhaul, not the economy, is the election's "most salient issue."

"The campaign doesn't hinge in unemployment rates," he said later. "We conservatives don't believe government creates jobs."

The comments sparked a rash of criticism that Romney picked up on at his final campaign stop of the day at Bradley University in central Illinois.

"One of the people who is running also for the Republican nomination today said that he doesn't care about the unemployment rate," Romney told college students in Peoria, Ill. "It does bother me. I want to get people back to work. I am concerned about those how are out of work."

In remarks in Rockford, Ill., Santorum said an oppressive government rather than the economy is the real issue of the presidential campaign.

"At every single speech that I give I talk about Obamacare," he said. "Every single speech I say that the issue in this race is not the economy. The reason the economy is an issue in this race is because we have a government that is oppressing its people and taking away their freedom and the economy is suffering as a result of it."

Santorum later explained his comments as being about freedom, not the economy.

"The problem with the economy is government taking people's freedom away and advancing regulations, destroying and undermining businesses ability to be problem solvers," he told Chicago radio station WLS. "Americans don't take kindly to the yoke of government, and we don't do very well. Our economy struggles when that happens"

Romney, meanwhile, campaigned in the city where Obama taught law at the University of Chicago and where the president has his national campaign headquarters. Avoiding any reference to Republican opponents during his afternoon speech, Romney assailed the president.

"The American economy is fueled by freedom," he said, flanked by a row of American flags. "The Obama administration's assault on our economic freedom is the principal reason why the recovery has been so tepid ? and why it couldn't meet their expectations, let alone ours."

At the current primary election rate, Romney would capture the nomination in June unless Santorum or Gingrich wins decisively in the coming contests. Including Puerto Rico's results, Romney has now collected 521 delegates, compared to Santorum's 253, Gingrich's 136 and Paul's 50, according to an Associated Press tally.

Romney and a growing number of Republicans across the country are eager to move beyond the increasingly nasty primary season that has consumed far more energy, resources and political capital than most expected. But the former Massachusetts governor has so far struggled to win over his party's most passionate voters ? tea party activists and evangelicals who don't trust him as a true conservative.

Romney's wife, Ann, had called for Republicans to unite behind her husband at a campaign stop the night before, suggesting it was time to "move on to the next challenge."

Indeed, the battle for Illinois comes as Obama's campaign builds a mountain of campaign cash and organization in key states.

Obama collected $45 million for his re-election bid in February, accelerating his fundraising pace as his campaign fretted over an oncoming spending blitz by Republican-leaning outside groups.

With Republicans locked in their extended primary campaign, Obama's team is building a 50-state operation that aims to help register new voters, bring back past supporters and boost turnout. Obama's campaign had about $75 million in the bank through the end of January, but totals for February were not immediately available.

Romney and Santorum, by comparison, raised $11.5 million and $9 million respectively in February. And Romney and his allies are spending large amounts in Illinois.

Romney's campaign had spent $1.1 million, while the pro-Romney super PAC, Restore Our Future, had spent an additional $2.4 million on advertising in Illinois through Monday, according to figures collected by the media monitoring firm, SMG Delta. Santorum's super PAC, the Red White and Blue Fund, had spent $327,000, while his campaign had spent $200,000.

Each side bought television ads that attacked the other. And though Romney focused on Obama Monday, he had spent much of the previous week calling Santorum "an economic lightweight," an indication that he continues to view Santorum as a threat.

ATLANTA (AP) ? As a fierce thunderstorm that seemed to come out of nowhere closed in, hot-air balloon pilot Edward Ristaino spotted an open field 4,000 feet below and calmly and tersely warned the five skydivers aboard the craft, "You need to get out now."

He may have saved their lives, but he lost his own.

With lightning spidering across the sky and the wind rocking their parachutes, the skydivers floated safely to the ground, while the balloon was sucked up into the clouds, then sent crashing to earth. Ristaino's body wasn't found until Monday, nearly three days later.

"If we would have left a minute later, we would have been sucked into the storm," said skydiver Dan Eaton.

The group had taken off Friday evening, ascending into a blue sky from a festival in Fitzgerald, Ga., about 175 miles south of Atlanta. From the air, they could see only a haze that soon turned menacing.

"It started off as just a red dot on the radar, and then it mushroomed very quickly into a big storm. This one just popped up out of the blue," Ben Hill County Sheriff Bobby McLemore said.

The 63-year-old Ristaino sighted a 15-acre clearing, then told the skydivers to get out, uttering the words with remarkable calm.

Skydiver Dennis Valdez said he regrets not strapping the pilot in with him when he jumped, but he didn't realize how dire the situation was.

"We had no idea what was going on in the pilot's head," Valdez said. "It was only apparent to me post facto that he was definitely very nervous about the weather, rushing to get us out of there."

Likewise, skydiver Jessica Wesnofske said she didn't comprehend how bad the storm had become until the winds whipped and rocked her parachute on the way down.

An updraft took Ristaino into the clouds, 17,000 or 18,000 feet up, he told his ground crew via walkie-talkie. Then the storm apparently collapsed the balloon and twisted it into a streamer. In his last transmission, he reported that he was at 2,000 feet and saw trees beneath him, according to the sheriff.

After searching the woods with helicopters, airplanes, horses and all-terrain vehicles, crews found Ristaino's body in the gondola of his twisted-up craft, about eight miles from where the skydivers landed.

The storm's chaotic crosscurrents had complicated searchers' efforts to figure out where the balloon crashed. Authorities used radar images of the storm to help guide the 50 to 75 searchers across 12 to 15 square miles.

Ristaino operated a balloon sightseeing company out of his home in Cornelius, N.C., about 20 miles north of Charlotte. He was described as a superb balloonist.

"He could take that balloon, blow it up in his front yard and take it up, missing all those power lines and everything," said Carole White, a neighbor. "He's been doing this for years and years. He loves it."

Balloon pilots have to be certified by the Federal Aviation Administration, a process that includes training in such things as safety and meteorology.

Troy Bradley, president of the Balloon Federation of America, said that with the growing sophistication of radar technology and the wealth of radar data now available, ballooning accidents involving storms are rare. But sudden weather changes occasionally catch pilots aloft, he said.

Eaton, who has jumped from planes, helicopters and the occasional hot air balloon, said he knows enough about skydiving to recognize when he shouldn't go up. And Friday, he said, wasn't one of those days.

"We never saw it coming," he said. "We had blue skies all day. There was no issue. If there was an issue about the winds, I wouldn't have jumped. It's just not worth it."

On his way down, Valdez said, he felt helpless as he watched the outline of Ristaino's balloon fade into a storm cloud.

"He put us before he put his own safety," Valdez said.

Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Manpower and Reserve Affairs, the honorable Juan M. Garcia, and Chief of Navy Reserve Vice Admiral Dirk J. Debbink, met with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 3 Detail Horn of Africa (HOA) Seabees at Camp Lemonnier?s Morale, Welfare and Recreation turf field for calisthenics, ?ammo? can carry drills and more.

Garcia said after so many years of combat it?s good to focus on fitness for the future of the Navy.

?With the new national defense strategy, in which the Navy figures centrally, they know we can?t afford to lose man days, to sick days,? Garcia said. ?Physical fitness has never been more important than it is now.?

Engineering Aid 1st Class (SCW) Edward J. Brock, NMCB 3 Detachment HOA command fitness leader, said Seabees take their fitness seriously.

?Because we train as a command six times per week, I?ve seen a vast improvement in our overall level of fitness,? Brock said. ?We have more energy, with many inches and pounds lost.?

Vice Adm. Debbink also sees the positive impact fitness can have on Sailors and their work.

?The 21st Century Sailor and Marine initiative is all about helping our Sailors and Marines be the best that they can be,? explained Debbink. ?To be a healthy and fit Sailor helps us do our jobs better.?

After physical training, the distinguished guests toured NMCB 3 projects then engaged in an all hands call with sailors and Marines at Camp Lemonnier, where they discussed the future of Navy personnel programs and answered questions from active duty and Reserve service members.

Health and physical fitness was one of the topics sailors and Marines had on their minds.

Garcia discussed the move from a ?culture of testing? to a ?culture of fitness.? He explained how programs under the 21st Century initiative, such as Navy Operational Fitness and Fueling System and ?Fueled to Fight? will help achieve the transformation.

According to Garcia, NOFFS is an online guide with a smart phone application that provides operational platform-specific fitness routines tailored to a specific ship or location. The ?Fueled to Fight? program will be adopted fleet-wide to make it easier to select nutrient-rich food choices using a standard color-coding system, he said.

The guests also ate lunch with sailors and Marines from commands around camp. Posters and table tents with information about nutrition were on hand, along with a table displaying several healthy meals comprised fresh fruit, vegetables and low-fat grilled meats.

Culinary Specialist 1st Class (SCW/SW/AW) Misty D. McMasters, Camp Lemonnier?s galley manager, explained that there are always plenty of healthy options offered daily.

With eyes the size of basketballs, the squid can detect the faint light of a moving sperm whale from a distance of about 294 feet (120 meters), the length of an American football field including end zones. That may be enough time to plan an escape, the researchers said.

The study is speculative, as interactions between sperm whales and giant squid aren't easy to observe. In fact, researchers had never even seen a live giant squid in action until 2005, when Japanese scientists managed to capture one on video. But the researchers say their new model is a step forward in understanding how undersea creatures see.

"It is a powerful tool for understanding vision," Nilsson said.

Marvell launches Kinoma Play app platform for Android

Almost a year has passed since we last saw Marvell's Kinoma platform in person, but the time has finally arrived for its release. We got the chance to sit down with Peter Hoddie, VP of the Kinoma Platform, to learn a little bit more about his software and what Kinoma can bring to your smartphone experience. First, a quick refresher. Kinoma Play is technically an app, but in reality it serves as an entirely new UI for your Android device running versions 2.1 and up. The platform currently has 50 of its own apps -- written in Kinoma Play Script, a Javascript language -- that are obtained through the Kinoma store, and these apps can be accessed on their own or through Play's unique dashboard system.

There are currently five dashboards: Play, Search, Places, Music, and Send, with more to come as users ask for them. These dashboards group related apps and allow you to access them simultaneously in a truncated, list form -- for instance, the search dashboard returns results from Google, Yahoo, Wikipedia, Bing, and any other Kinoma app you choose to add. In addition to those useful dashboards, the software improves the UX by simply speeding things up. It's a lightweight platform with small apps (many are only 100 - 150KB in size) that launch quickly and run smoothly. Still not sold?
